Why Water Cremation is the Preferred Green Alternative to Cremation

Traditional flame cremation consumes high amounts of fossil fuels and releases carbon dioxide and mercury into the atmosphere. Water cremation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis or aquamation, is a breakthrough green alternative to cremation that uses 90% less energy.

Zero Emissions

No harmful greenhouse gases or mercury are released.

Eco-Conscious

A flameless process that uses a gentle flow of water and alkaline salts.

Conserves Resources

Preserves natural land and eliminates the need for expensive, non-biodegradable caskets or vaults.

why flameless?

More and more families are choosing the green option

Many families are disturbed by the thought of setting the remains of their loved one on fire. They also appreciate a green alternative to burial that avoids the environmental impact of embalming fluids and land use. Water cremation mirrors the natural process of decomposition but occurs over hours rather than years.  By choosing Leaf & Water, you are choosing a "gentle farewell" that returns your loved one to the earth without the ecological footprint of a traditional cemetery plot.

Gentle Choice

Flameless cremation, also known as water cremation or alkaline hydrolysis, emits no harmful greenhouse gases or mercury, making it a gentle, eco-conscious choice for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint.

Gentle Environment

This process uses significantly less energy than traditional flame-based methods, minimizing the use of fossil fuels and conserving precious natural resources. The byproducts are safe and can be returned to the earth, leaving no lasting impact on the environment.

Gentle Farewell

Flameless cremation offers a more natural and gentle way to say goodbye to loved ones. With a process that mirrors natural decomposition, it honors both the individual and the planet, ensuring a respectful return to the earth.

Choosing Direct Flameless Cremation

When you choose water cremation through Leaf & Water, your loved one's remains are retrieved by a licensed funeral director in your area and brought to their funeral home to be prepared for cremation at our facility in Vermont. There is no formal funeral service or viewing, making it an affordable and efficient choice for families who prefer to forgo or delay a traditional ceremony.

We return your loved one's remains directly to you, allowing for more personalized memorial services or private gatherings at a time and place of your choosing. This option offers flexibility and cost savings while still providing a meaningful way to honor a loved one.

Can you still have a funeral or memorial service?

Yes! Most families choose direct water cremation specifically so they can hold a private, personalized service later.  But, Leaf & Water can also provide water cremation after a traditional funeral service, even if your loved one has been embalmed.
